La Crescenta is Free

The fires above La Crescenta have burned out and the backfires to prevent flare-ups are over and people are finally returning to the neighborhoods. There are still a lot of fires still in the LA area, and Mt Wilson is still in trouble. The heavy hitters in the LAFD air fleet have been called in, but smoke around the mountain is making air drops dangerous and fighting the fire on the ground is hampered by the terrain. The servers at the observatory campus have gone silent when power was cut off to the mountain.

Only a few hours ago, there were a couple of astronomers there riding out the fire and firefighters on the ground trying to combat the blaze. There had been a considerable amount of optimism about saving the facility and though unpredictable and hard to get to, the fire has been less troublesome than it might have been. By this evening (Tuesday), firefighters were saying that it looks like the mountain is now out of danger.

The fire is technically only 20% contained, officially. Unofficially, it looks like the worst is over.
